Carousel, Palace of the Golden Horses, Ramadan Buffet, Mines, Malaysia

Palace of the Golden Horses Ramadan Buffet at the Carousel by guest writer Sam Gibbs.

I recently had the pleasure to be invited to preview the Ramadan Buffet on offer during the fasting month at the Carousel Restaurant situated on the lower ground floor of the Palace of the Golden Horses.
Having negotiated the Equestrian marvels of the lobby and hotel one finds the Carousel filled with a tapestry of delicious offerings all dedicated to the finest traditions of Malaysian cuisine.

The staff informed me that each evening focuses on different regional specialties and dishes coming from North, South East and West of the Peninsular. The evening’s delicious offerings were, to say the least, extensive and vast in variety and variation. One could not find a single element missing in this stunning array of dishes and flavors.

Also available are delicately rolled Popiah, addictive mouthfuls of Roti John, marinated Satay, freshly grilled seafoods and without question one of the most sophisticated Ice Kajang stalls ever seen in the cosmos.

As much as the Asian flavor was thoroughly represented one could also find a fair presentation of European and Thai cuisine. The Creamy Chicken Veloute with Mushrooms, Crispy Thai Style Fish, Roast Lamb and potatoes with Rosemary sauce and a comprehensive salad bar provide yummy alternatives for those seeking different choices.

I barely managed to make it to the dessert bar where I rescued a spoonful of the recently destroyed chocolate mousse. It will not fail you chocolate lovers. Its state was definitely testament to its popularity. Also on offer was a boggling array of traditional and international desserts that included the beautifully presented Kuih, Bubur Pisang and Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding.

Even for those who are not participating in Ramadan, I would fully recommend this as an essential encyclopaedia of Malaysia’s best flavours  prepared with care and attention to detail.
Bookings are advised and the buffet is available for the first 3 weeks of the fasting month only.

Priced very reasonably at RM98 for adults and RM48 for children I would say the Carousel would have to be a 'must do' fasting month experience.

Reason to visit: This would have to be one of the most comprehensive offerings of Malaysian cuisine I have ever seen. The chefs were competent and knew their food. I particularly enjoyed the Roti John and delicately spicy beef curry. Also of note was the Roast Lamb with Rosemary sauce.
