You’ve shopped until you’ve dropped in Bukit Bintang, and you need reviving. There can’t be a more perfect way to rejuvenate than to pop into Bistro 160 at the Grand Millennium Hotel to be enlivened by their Chocolate Afternoon Tea. The presentation, imaginatively created by Executive Chef Laurent Lherisson, is absolutely gorgeous, with a wow factor that will thrill eager patrons. Nestled on a bed of chocolate drops, every tasty morsel is made of premium, Belgian chocolate.
Instead of sandwiches, Chef has created slices of chocolate brioche with three cream fillings, vanilla, coffee and my favourite, strawberry, which is slightly more sour than sweet. You will find it difficult to know which little delight to try next, but you’ll certainly want to taste them all! I loved the crispy Churros, a finger of fried dough buried in a shot glass of chocolate sauce, while the Profiterole had a topping of my favourite, rich, dark chocolate. There was a nice little slice of Opera cake, a Chocolate Almond Financier with a dollop of chocolate cream on top and an Almond Praline.
Adding a dramatic second level to the presentation, Chef had mounted Rocky Road balls on bamboo skewers, a treat from Australia and a special tribute to The Yum List’s creator, Monica Tindall. There were several little Chocolate Macarons too, so easy to pop in the mouth. For further indulgence, there are Chocolate Scones, served with whipped cream and just in case you haven’t had enough, there’s a pump bottle of chocolate syrup to increase the cocoa factor.
This tea set is served with a tall glass of hot, frothed milk accompanied by a chocolate bar on a stick. You can choose between hazelnut milk chocolate or dark chocolate. The idea is to dip the stick in the hot liquid and enjoy playing with it as it melts oozily into the milk. Chef Laurent feels that food, especially dessert, should be fun, and I certainly returned to childhood as I messed with my chocolate.
We felt that so much chocolate would pair beautifully with a cocktail, and minutes later an Espresso Martini magically appeared. What a super addition to the whole combination. A heady mixture of espresso, vodka, Kahlua, Grand Marnier and sugar syrup, the orange overtones blending perfectly with the coffee. No question, it would be the ideal choice to accompany this special Afternoon Tea.
