Twinpalms Phuket, Thailand
Surin Beach on the west coast of Phuket bears one of the island’s most entertaining and fashionable resorts, Twinpalms Phuket. Founder of the infamous “White Party,” the theme of fun and leisure is carried through to all that makes up this beautiful beachside resort.
For less than 100 rooms, these boutique accommodations support an incredible amount of facilities. Pools, beach club, spa, fitness, numerous dining and drinking outlets and the waterfront location ensures guests could happily occupy themselves for days without leaving the site.
Top landscape architect, Martin Palleros, designed Twinpalms Phuket incorporating a seamless transition between nature and man-made modernity. Dubbed, ‘a stunning tropical water garden,’ the grounds of Twinpalms Phuket are just that. Abundant vegetation meets the water’s edge of lagoons, pools and calming water features.
The most striking cynosure is the central lagoon pool. Spanning over 1600m2 the centerpiece is 50m long meeting international competition standards. A sun-bleached deck is fringed with stylishly slim sun chairs and ivory umbrellas. Shaded day beds see manicured lawns sprouting with frangipanis on one side and the ocean blue pool on the other.
Again for only 97 rooms, Twinpalms Phuket does a brilliant job of catering to a variety of needs by offering a multitude of room categories. From the cool clean 55m2 space of a Deluxe Palm Room to the whopping 600m2 luxury of a Presidential Pool Suite, there’s something for most proclivities.
The most basic category presents giant glass sliding doors leading out to a balcony on one side of the bedroom and a separate bathroom on the other. Dark wood floors are brightened with white walls and bed coverings. Aquamarine paintings provide simple adornment and a connection between indoors and out. All the basics are covered with electronic safe, flat screen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi and mini-bar.
The wooden deck holds all weather lounge chairs and overlooks lush tropical greenery. When in this part of the world, an outdoor space accessed directly from your room is always appreciated. For a step up, the 15 Lagoon Pool Rooms benefit from access from their private balconies to meandering dipping ponds shaded with viridescent foliage.
Our stay began with a signature welcome of a bubbly cocktail and presentation of a jasmine bracelet in the main lobby before being greeted by a resident host.
Led to our accommodation, the host took our details for check-in within the comfort of the lounge of our Penthouse Pool Suite. Part of the formalities included customizing the particulars of our stay to our desired preferences and an orientation to the indulgent three stories of living space. Which pillow would we like? How about fruit likings? Which scent takes our fancy for the diffuser and, what flowers would bring happiness to our home? (Our answers: memory foam; mix of pineapple, mango and pomelo; lemongrass; and frangipanis.) Informed that the residence host service is on-call 24 hours a day, we were left alone but with the reminder that assistance is a mere call away.
Composed of a downstairs living and dining area with separate bathroom, a mid-level bedroom and ensuite and, rooftop pool the triplex Penthouse Pool Suite is a sanctuary of stylish calm and lavish space.
Milky marble floors and white walls are the palette for dark wooden furniture with simple functional lines and a few well-placed artworks in the form of contemporary paintings and ceramics. The entry level is an open living and dining area with a double height ceiling and separate bathroom. A dining table capable of seating six, a breakfast bar, working desk, sofa, armchairs and coffee table make up the big furniture items. Modern technology however further enhances comfort with a 46 inch flat screen TV, high quality surround sound system, stereo and iPod connection.
The mini-bar is impressive! A dedicated wine fridge with quality drops such as a vintage Dom Perignon is sided with a liquor cabinet of big name spirits. Glasses hang from a rack above ensuring you have the appropriate shape and size for your selected beverage. Two mini-fridges hold further refreshment and not only is there an espresso machine, but a separate milk frother too!
The splendor continues on the mid-level with a king sized bed dressed in 385 thread count linens. Two self-contained wardrobes give each his/her own space with soft robes and slippers enclosed too. Double sinks in the bathroom are almost a ‘must’ these days and our room is up with the times. Molten Brown bath products from London add a lush designer stroke to the general feel and, a free-standing bathtub begs to be filled.
Moving to the rooftop, the Penthouse Pool Suite shines with its private 9x3m pool. An infinity edge, frangipani on the deck, cushioned sun chairs and, another mini-bar make this a playground we’re not keen on leaving anytime soon. That said however, there’s much fun to be discovered around this property, so we set off to explore.
Food and Beverage
Most room deals include breakfast and ours is taken at Oriental Spoon Grill and Bar. Thai, Western and fusion influences thread the cuisine and contemporary Thai art marks the interior. This is Twinpalms all day dining option and the atmosphere hots up at night with regular live music. Our stay is blessed with the skill of a pianist from San Francisco who extends a more refined style of entertainment than that found at the pumping beach clubs. Check out our experience at Oriental Spoon via this link.
Catch Beach Club is a must for anyone visiting or residing on the island of Phuket. Famed for the alliterating trio of fun, fashion and fabulousness, this beach club is best visited late afternoon in time to grab a cool cocktail and marvel at the magnificent sunset. Staying on through the evening rewards night owls with some of the most talked about parties in the region. We tried their buffet. Find out what they serve here.
While Catch Beach Club is the place to be seen in the evenings, BIMI Beach Club is Phuket’s only all day party scene. Fresh local and international snacks and light meals keep tummies satiated as bodies strut their tanned, trim lines while mingling and dancing on the soft sandy shores of the Surin.
Twinpalms too has other outlets around the island to which they’re happy to transfer you to. FLAME’s open kitchens provide in house entertainment and true to its name barbecued fare. Take away and home delivery are popular options for those homebodies who prefer the comfort of their own couch or dining table for meals. Pasta, Sushi and Bake are three more outlets, offering further choice to both residing and visiting guests.
Thailand is known for its scrumptious food and exotic cocktails and we’ve had more than our fill at Twinpalms. All those calories add up and we’re happy to find a well equipped fitness centre to keep our hips under control. A boutique allows a little shopping in the comfort of the resort and a library is decked with books, magazines and a few computer terminals to stay connected with the world or check-in for your next flight.
Esthederm Spa is a must visit. Specifically designed for Phuket’s climate, all treatments take into account the tropical heat and sun exposure in their design. Products are suitable for use in the sun and an extensive menu provides custom treatments for individualised goals and skin types. Read about our spa experience via this link.
Corporate Social Responsibility
More than ever contemporary resorts are realizing the importance of sustainable practices. We’re happy to see a number of principles in place at Twinpalms showing their commitment to the environment and respect for the local community.
Employment of local staff is highly encouraged and training and opportunities to grow are clearly in place. The use of local products, such as Aka coffee beans from Northern Thailand, too is highly valued, contributing not only to the growth of Thai businesses but the reduction of carbon miles also. Although on a public beach, Twinpalms takes responsibility for cleaning it daily and invite staff to take care of public spaces.
