Old Town Johor Bahru, Top Five Things to Do, Malaysia

Coconut Buns - One of the "Must Eats" when in JB.

In a recent trip to Johor Bahru a local foodie friend took us on a gourmet tour of his favourite spots in the old town. Here's a run down of his most loved places to find the best local dishes.

Hiap Joo Bakery and Biscuit Factory
Line up for the banana bread and coconut buns at Hiap Joo Bakery and Biscuit Factory. Baking times are posted on the door. Be early if you don't want to miss out!

Restoran Reaz Corner
Not only does their sign say that they have the "best biryani Bombay in town," but our Johorian bon vivant says so too.

Restoran Hua Mui
This is the place for the best chicken chop in JB.

Silahuddin Bakery
A little twist on regular curry puffs is seen in the mutton filling of these triangles. Best eaten hot out of the oven to appreciate the flaky pastry.

1920 Toddy (Coconut Wine) Shop
Only for the brave-hearted, this is the locale for a taste of toddy, the feisty local brew!

  2. Thanks Monica and Junior Caning Cordobes - for the reminder. I need fresh Vienna bread today.
I only will eat bread from a fresh bread shop. That supermarket mass produced stuff is tasteless.
Here the problem in Brisbane is that the supermarket monopoly is putting all our private bakeries
out of business - the same with butchers.
The best city where bread and meat can still be purchased from private bakers and butchers is
by far Adelaide and also towns in SA have great butchers and bakers - very strange????
Qld is by far the worst state in this respect!!!!
Now off to get my fresh Vienna style bread.
C'mon "Franco" - that's my Andalusian steed - off we go.
    Cheers

PS: I think my imagination is in over drive this morning - ha ha.

    1. Oh dear, now you've named you steed... I'm starting to worry ;-)
Agreed, I avoid the supermarket mass produced variety at all costs. I'd much prefer a local boutique bakery.

    2. No bread shops in the Brisbane CBD - one was there but only sold baguettes and rolls!
Well in San Sebastian, Franco and Juan Carlos who soon was to take over, did give me
a wave as they passed by in a motorcade - with PLEASE note very little security.
Not like one country I could mention - ha ha - where security is really over the top!

  4. Never been to JB. I really must make a trip there one of these days to see what they have in store. Not a fan of coconut buns though - that one, I'd pass...and the toddy too, thank you very much.

    1. Ha, ha... we thought we were very brave drinking at the toddy shop. We heard a rumour that they barbecue monitor lizards there too - not the water variety, but the high mountain type which are apparently much better. ;-)

    1. Thanks Linda. The banana bread is what causes lines twice a day at this place - people are willing to wait up to an hour to make sure they don't miss out. :-)

  8. I forgot to mention that it is in Malaysia I tasted the best banana muffins... every day I got my stock (I ate 3 per day) can't remember the name of the tiny bakery!!!
Those muffins were delicious I tried to do here, the taste is there but not the texture. I wonder what it's banana bread, banana cake I know, is it the same???

  10. Toddy is a refreshing drink and fragrant when it is fresh. Once it started to ferment will be a different thing. I love coconut bun.
